2. SKILL EXPECTATIONS AND BUSINESS APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT
2.1 Summary
There are some skills
and qualities employers seek in all their employees, regardless of
the position. These are called soft
skills, and
they include the interpersonal skills and attributes you need to succeed in the
workplace. They are also commonly referred to as professional
skills,
those that maintain a healthy workplace environment.
2.2 Learning Outcome
The purpose
of the webinar is that we can learn what companies look for in employees, what
are the key competency areas that companies focus on, what are the competencies
needed for the future workspace, different types of skills and competencies
that you should develop. We can learn what a business application is, scope and
different applications of business applications and development of business
applications as well.
2.3 Application of the area covered
Your
education and experience may make you eligible to apply for a job but, to be
successful in most roles, you will need skills that you are likely to develop
over time. Some will be specific to the job, but the vast majority will be
so-called ‘soft skills’ that can be used in any job or employment sectors.
These soft skills are ‘employability skills’: they are what makes you
employable.
As a general rule, employers are willing to teach someone the job-specific skills required, such as how to operate particular pieces of machinery, or use particular computer packages that are very specific to that role or company. However, they usually want to see that you already have the other ‘soft skills’ before hiring, because they are much harder to teach.
Companies look for the right knowledge, skills and competencies in individuals because they are needed to succeed in this industry. Willingness to learn is also another thing that companies look for in employees because every day in the industry you learn something new. Most importantly employees should have a positive attitude and be emotionally intelligent. When something goes wrong, the employee must be able to figure out ways to make the situation better and consider the failures as opportunities to learn and take precautions to prevent it from happening again.
Your skills,
organizations, institutions, and values shape how we develop. Technology can at
least provide a framework for thinking about the future. Technological advances
can create enormous economic and other benefits, but can also lead to
significant changes for workers. IT and automation can change the way work is
conducted, by augmenting or replacing workers in specific tasks. This can shift
the demand for some types of human labour, eliminating some jobs and creating
new ones. Information Technology and the U.S. Workforce explores the
interactions between technological, economic, and societal trends and
identifies possible near-term developments for work. This report emphasizes the
need to understand and track these trends and develop strategies to inform,
prepare for, and respond to changes in the labour market. It offers evaluations
of what is known, notes open questions to be addressed and identifies promising
research pathways moving forward.
Analytical thinking, expertise, innovativeness, information seeking, result oriented, adapt & respond, reflecting on difficulties, integrity, listen, understand & respond, communication & presentation, organizational commitment, self-confidence, self-control, concern for image impact, relationship building, teamwork and cooperation are the skills that an individual should possess and further develop in order to be a demanding and an outstanding employee in an organization.
Enjoying your career is more important than earning a high salary or flashy title. It allows you to fulfil your role to the best of your ability. It helps you too. As the saying goes, "Professionalism is not the job you do, it's how you do the job”. When you are working as a professional, it is important that you do what you love, do what you are good at, provide what the world needs from you and do something that you can be paid for.

For many
people today, a career for life is no longer an option. Most people will hold
jobs with a variety of employers and move across different employment sectors
through their working life.
We therefore
all need to be flexible in our working patterns and be prepared to change jobs
and/or sectors if we believe there are better opportunities elsewhere.
For this, we need to understand that we all have a set of employability skills. These are skills that are not specific to one particular career path but are useful across all employment sectors.
